🏔️ The business team at Column Tax
At Column Tax, we’re building the next generation of tax products in the U.S.
Over the last two years, we’ve built out the foundation for the business. We’ve done that with a small and mighty business team. To date, we’ve had two people on the business team working with the founders to grow & run the business. We’re now working with over 30 companies to power tax filing. We’ve grown to a team of 25+ full-time employees (and 50+ when you include seasonal and contractors).
Over the last year, we’ve focused almost exclusively on growing the business. It’s working! Now it’s time to scale our company & operations along with it.
📈 The next phase of growth at Column Tax
What does the founding BizOps role look like?
You will own 6 areas at Column. This includes all business functions besides Sales and Account Management.
Areas of ownership | Example areas of focus |
Finance | Manage the P&L, run AR/AP, vendor management |
HR | Revamp & run onboarding, manage day-to-day HR needs |
Marketing | Run our marketing & PR work |
Investor Relations | Prep for & help run board meetings, manage investor updates |
Recruiting | Manage recruiting for all roles at Column |
Internal Comms | Run all hands, plan offsites and more |
Right now, the co-founder/CEO is running point for all of these (read as: Keeping the lights on). You’ll work directly with him to take these areas of the business over, automate pieces & make them way better.
Because this is such a wide area of ownership, prioritization and focus will be big parts of the role. At times, marketing will be the most important work. At other times, it will be company onboarding. At times it will be building materials for an upcoming board meeting. This is a one-of-a-kind role where you’ll have a chance to run and scale parts of a business that usually have many people in each function.
You’ll have a very wide mandate and lots of room to operate. This is an execution role above all else. If getting things done is what drives you, this is great potential fit. When the time is right, we’ll look at you to help hire out and scale the functions here (when the areas you own grow to that size).
How do we measure success for BizOps at Column Tax? (Specifically, you when it’s just you!)
- Are people consistently surprised how much we’re able to do?
- Are we go-to people at the company? When someone needs something done, are we the first person they think of and want to work with?
- Are we always prioritizing the most important work for the company?
- Are we able to get anything done (no matter how ambiguous or ambitious it is)?
- Are we one of the best & most responsive teams they’ve ever worked with?
💻 About you:
In order to be successful in this role, you’ll have to be a business & operations “generalist” who is able to flex across a variety of areas.
We believe that people from a wide range of backgrounds have the opportunity to be successful in this role. Some examples of ones that might be a fit:
- You have been on a BizOps team as an IC and want a step up in responsibility & ownership
- You’ve worked in a business function (Sales, Finance, etc.) and want a wider range of experience and ownership
- You’ve worked in Marketing. You are excited about leading Marketing at Column but also want to grow as a business generalist
- You are working in consulting or finance and want to make a step to working at a startup
As a person, you most likely are:
- A do-er at heart. Your default is to lean in and get it done, whatever “it” is.
- Able to pair strategy with execution (”Figure out what to do. Then do it.”)
- Someone who has worked at an early-stage startup (or has experience working in an environment with an intense pace)
- Comfortable “figuring it out.” Many times you’ll be solving a problem that you haven’t worked on previously. You should be the kind of person who’s excited about figuring it out, and the messy-ness that comes with that!
- Someone who hasn’t seen a problem you weren’t excited to solve 😄
- The kind of person who gets excited about doing the little things needed to make a company run
